The Gaps Right Now
A still from An Insignificant Man which also got into trouble with the
government. Steering committee member of IFFI, Anand Gandhi believes not. "Of
the 153 films selected initially, the jury was to recommend 22 films to the
ministry, which would then select 20 out of those. If not, S Durga and Nude, two
other films would have been dropped and the jury would have a problem with those
then,†shrugs the filmmaker. According to the filmmaker, the best way to improve
the situation would be to create an autonomous body for the festival alone. What
has not changed however is government interference into films.â€
Decades have
passed since then and government measures have changed. If the ministry were to
leave the decisions to them entirely, or at least, largely, then most certainly,
we would have a far better festival than what we have at the moment. Avinash’s
words can perhaps find further validation in the fact that MAMI had a screening
of S Durga in their India Gold section — the same film that the I&B Ministry
has dropped from the IFFI line-up without any explanation. Would we want to risk
looking as though we (the BJP government) is muzzling artistic freedom?†asks
preview board member and BJP politician Vani Tripathi Tikoo rhetorically. "In my
interaction as a member of the steering committee with the ministry, I have seen
a genuine effort on the ministry’s part to try and alleviate the calibre of
discourse and to take small steps towards becoming a truly global film
festival.â€S Durga posterFilmmaker Avinash Das also condemns all government
interference, calling it the principle reason for the stagnation of art and
culture forums. Festival of India (IFFI) by the information and broadcasting
(I&B) ministry, stand testimony to this fact. Just put Mumbai Academy of
Moving China
wholesale Disposable Pillow Cover Image’s (MAMI) Mumbai Film Festival and
IFFI side-by-side.
"The voice of dissent is also an integral part of that
beautiful fabric of India democracy.Back in the 1970s, Satyajit Ray had
complained about the process of getting a government sanctions to send films to
send them to film festivals as "bureaucratic shilly-shallying. And we shall be
hearing a lot of dissenting voices in the films that we’ve chosen for the
panorama this year at IFFI,†she says.Convenor of the Preview Committee for
IFFI, Vivek Agnihotri, however, sheds some light on the matter, claiming that
two films would have been dropped either way. The body could even change the
rules as they are now, so that they could negotiate the decisions taken. "If one
only takes a look at bodies like the Sahitya Akademi, one can see that they’re
autonomous. I would like to have a deeper insight into what is happening and how
best as citizens, as artistes and filmmakers of this country, how best we can
help bridge the gaps right now that exist,†he signs off.Anand also admits that
the matter is not as black and white as it seems. With the upheavals around the
festival showing no signs of abating, one wonders whether government intrusion
at an international film festival is desirable at all.

Their Views Are Outdated
The board has been the most retrogressive to Muslim women rights on the question
of triple talaq. Both are wrong, and both need to be condemned and opposed. Even
worse, Such guardians, who issue all kinds of ridiculousNeedle Punched Fabric factoryfatwas at the drop of a hat, need to be challenged, not the least by liberal Muslim opinion itself, of which, unfortunately, the board justified the practice of Nikah Halala wherein a divorced
Muslim woman must sleep with another man before she can remarry her first
husband.
It actually said that while the practice was not without blemish, it
must still be regarded as valid. They have thus far exercised a monopoly on what
constitutes "correct†Muslim behaviour, and are stubbornly unwilling to accept
that their views are outdated, iniquitous, and insensitive to notions of gender
equality, to the much-needed reform within the Muslim community, and to the
concept of a modern and progressive society. Our own Darul Uloom Deoband, which
claims to be the highest Islamic seminary in India, came out earlier this month
with a fatwa that is even more bizarre.
Other Islamic seminaries, and so-called
Islamic clerics, have not been lagging behind in their misplaced activism.

System Of Laws And Enforcement
A woman drives a car in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, as part of a campaign to defy
Saudi Arabia's ban on women driving. The list of forbidden activities for the
fairer sex is too voluminous and entrenched in the Saudi body politic to be
wiped out clean. Overturning of the ban might minimally improve women’s presence
in the Saudi workforce and boost the "Vision 2030†economic diversification
blueprint of the new crown prince Mohammad bin Salman.Feminists hold that all
nation-states, not just hardline Islamic Antimicrobial
non-woven fabric ones, are "gendered†to some extent as they are built upon
unjust distribution of rights and duties that disadvantage women and legalise
their inferiority.
She shows how the Saudi state and its allied Wahhabi clerics
consciously use suppression of women to forge a unified nationalistic narrative
over heterogeneous pre-Islamic tribal traditions and set Saudi Arabia apart as
an exceptionally pure Islamic country. Abolishing the whole fulcrum of the
guardianship legal frame and the Sharia justifications behind it would amount to
implosion of the Wahhabi monarchy itself. But when Saudi women covered in the
abaya (head-to-toe loose robes) do start revving engines on the streets, it
would not compensate for their overall second-class status in law where their
testimony equals half of that of a male Saudi. The young heir to the throne
hopes to consolidate his own power and displace rivals in the transitional
phase.Sreeram ChauliaSreeram Chaulia is a professor and Dean of the Jindal
School of International Affairs.Politically, the recent sensational palace coup
which upstaged the previous crown prince and elevated Mohammad bin Salman to the
pinnacle offers some context to the surprising edict easing women’s driving
conditions.
It is incapable of opening a wedge in the absolute patriarchal
system of laws and enforcement which relegates women to the status of
less-than-full human beings. Whenever the Saudi state is under duress and scared
of rising dissent, it looks for safety valves by easing a little bit of pressure
on society while keeping the overarching principles untouched. Positioning
himself as a socio-economic reformer can be a cynical ploy to weaken factions in
the clerical establishment opposed to him. But in the Saudi context of an
entrenched hereditary monarchy, voting and elections have negligible impact and
letting women cast ballots is another cosmetic measure.

With Imports From China
(Representational Image)New Delhi: The Confederation of Indian Textile Industry
(CITI) on Monday welcomed the GST Council39;s move to slash the rate on job work
like weaving, cutting, knitting and embroidery to 5 per cent from 18 per cent
decided earlier.
But job workers could not avail input tax credit that had been
increasing the cost of the products and affecting the export competitiveness and
also the domestic consumers," Jain said. However, Jain said the reduction of GST
rate for manmade fibre and synthetics from 18 to 12 per cent being postponed is
disappointing.
The GST Council, headed by Finance Minister Arun Jaitley
comprising Non-woven
anti-aging fabric representatives from all states, last week decided to tax
all job works in the textile sector at 5 per cent.
"A common rate across the
chain would also avoid confusion."We have apprehensions that Indian market would
get flooded with imports from China, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka, which would end
up in huge job losses," Jain said.Five per cent GST rate on job works would
enable the industry to claim full input credit. This 5 per cent rate will be
applicable for job works in apparel, shawls and carpets. end-ofTags: textile
